Catalonia’s Minister of Economy, Andreu Mas-Colell, will meet with parliamentary groups next week to inform them of the "gravity" of the situation concerning the treasury of the Generalitat and of the actions being taken with the Spanish Treasury to resolve it.

This was announced by government spokesman Francesc Homs in a press conference following today’s cabinet meeting. "Except for payroll, this will have a very widespread effect. The situation is serious", said Homs, who described the problem as "extreme".

"There is enough capacity in Catalonia for this not to happen, but it is premeditated. To our surprise, there are those who spend their time throttling this government because we don’t pay", Homs said. And he insisted on pointing to the Spanish government for its willingness to "financially strangle" the Generalitat.

"As a government, we have noticed that we are caught in a pincer movement by the PP government, which subjects us to an unjustifiable financial asphyxiation, and those who criticize us for not paying our debts on time", summarized Homs. "The basic reasons are the same. There is no justification for us to have our hearts in our throats on a regular basis", he remarked.
