BarcelonaThe PSOE is seeking to launch a parliamentary inquest into Operation Catalonia. The aim of the PSOE’s first initiative in parliament this new term will be to determine whether Home Secretary Jorge Fernández Díaz has allowed ministry officials to infringe upon basic principles of the rule of law.

The socialist group in the Spanish parliament will ask the chamber to look into the affair of the leaked tapes where the Spanish Home Secretary can be heard plotting a smear campaign against CDC and ERC —Catalonia’s main separatist parties— with the director of Catalonia’s Anti-Fraud Office, Daniel de Alfonso. The PSOE will also request a probe into top officials of Spain’s National Police, such as superintendent José Manuel Villarejo, who admitted to his involvement in Operation Catalonia during a statement in court last Wednesday.

Spain’s socialists will summon the Home Secretary and other ministry officials for questioning in parliament and they will later consider whether other political appointees are to be questioned, too.
