On Wednesday the Catalan Ministry for Business and Knowledge announced that next year Korean Air will offer a direct flight between Barcelona and the capital of South Korea for the first time ever.

Korean Air, the largest South Korean carrier, revealed that flights will commence on April 28, 2017 and the airline expects to operate three scheduled flights weekly: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The route will be serviced by a Boeing 777-200, which can carry up to 248 passengers.

Catalonia’s Ministry for Business and Knowledge emphasised that the project was two years in the making with the involvement of the Air Route Development Committee of Barcelona (CDRA), the Ministry for Planning and Sustainability, the Catalan Tourism Agency and Acció, the Catalan Public competitiveness and internationalisation agency.

During a visit to Panama, where he is leading a business delegation, Catalan minister Jordi Baiget stated that he was “delighted to announce a direct flight between Barcelona and Seoul from April 2017” and he stressed that “it’s taken two years of work to achieve this”.

Baiget explained that “many Catalans have business, cultural or national ties with South Korea” and the new flights should “draw Korean visitors and from the broader region, especially from Japan, to Barcelona, either on business or for pleasure”.

With 21,000 employees, Koren Air currently operates flights to 129 destinations in 46 countries and carried nearly 25 million passengers in 2015. The airline’s hub is located at Incheon International Airport in Seoul.
