BrusselsThe European MPs from ERC-NeCat and Convergència have informed all of the members of the European Parliament about the agreement to create a joint candidacy with civil society led by Raül Romeva. Josep Maria Terricabras, Ernest Maragall, and Ramon Tremosa have written to all their fellow MEPs to explain that their parties have decided "to join forces with the Catalan civil society to run together in the upcoming elections" with a candidacy that will have "as its sole objective to achieve a mandate for independence". Terricabras, Maragall, and Tremosa highlight the fact that Romeva will lead the list and that, if it wins, "the process to achieve full independence will begin immediately".

"Former European MP from the Green party Raül Romeva will top the list. Romeva is a great politician who is truly pro-European, and was an honorable, hard-working member of this chamber for 10 years", said the MEPs in their letter, mailed to their 751 peers from all 28 EU countries.

"The Catalan elections on 27 September will be a de facto referendum on the independence of Catalonia, as Rajoy and the Spanish political establishment have repeatedly denied our right to decide our own future via a referendum, like that which Cameron and the United Kingdom allowed in Scotland", wrote Terricabras, Maragall, and Tremosa.

In the text, the three Catalan MEPs also glossed Romeva’s career, which is well known in Brussels, stating that "after supporting a federal solution for the Catalan issue during most of his life, he has changed his views in recent years". According to the European representatives of ERC and CDC, Romeva believes that independence "is the best solution for the Catalan people to achieve social justice, a prosperous society, and total integration with the EU". "The upcoming months will be exciting for the Catalan people and for European democracy", they predict.

Terricabras, Maragall, and Tremosa also attached the reports by the CEPS and the CIDBO that were unveiled yesterday in Brussels, which indicate that in the long term an independent Catalonia would be better off financially than an autonomous Catalonia within Spain, even in the case of a unilateral declaration of independence.
