On 1 October 2017, Catalonia held a referendum on independence in which almost 2.3 million people turned out to vote. The images most people remember, however, are not those of people voting, but instead of the Spanish riot police and the Guardia Civil charging the voters as they tried to defend the ballot boxes.

On Tuesday, on the second anniversary of 1-O, pro-independence organisations and political parties held a number of events to mark this historic day.
