Social Democrat, Conservative and Reformist, Liberal, Green and Eurosceptic Members of the European Parliament have lamented President Mas’ recent indictment for his involvement in the non-binding consultation of November 9 last year and have demanded “dialogue” and “political solutions”.

Britain’s conservative MEP Ian Duncan, who was an international observer to the consultation, stated that the Spanish government’s attitude towards Catalonia’s independence bid is “illogical and irrational”. Speaking for the Catalan News Agency, Duncan noted that “any democrat would be alarmed by what is going on in Catalonia and Spain at the moment”.

Belgian MEP Kathleen Van Brempt, the vice president of the social democrats in the EU parliament, demanded “dialogue” whereas liberal Petras Austrevicius made an appeal for “common sense to prevail”.
