BarcelonaAccording to an opinion poll conducted by radio network Cadena SER and published last Friday, Podemos would win the next Spanish elections, clearly defeating the PP. Pablo Iglesias’ party would get 27.5 per cent of the vote, while the PP would drop to 24.6 per cent, twenty points lower than in 2011. The PSOE’s result --with 19 per cent of the vote (a ten-point drop from the previous elections)-- would get them nowhere near Podemos.

The opinion poll suggests that Podemos would mainly receive their votes from those who didn’t use to vote, as well as former PSOE voters. 36 per cent of all Spaniards who abstained or cast a blank or null vote in 2011 would now vote for Pablo Iglesias, and so would 36 per cent of former PSOE voters. Up to 10 per cent of ex PP supporters would choose Podemos, too.

As for the rest of the parties, UPyD would grow from 4.7 to 5.5 per cent, neck and neck with Ciudadanos: Albert Rivera’s party would obtain 5 per cent of the vote. In contrast, IU would be penalised by the growth of Podemos, dropping from 6.9 per cent in 2011 to a mere 3.7 per cent.

On the Catalan front, the SER poll suggests ERC would be the most voted pro-independence party, with 2.4 per cent of the overall vote in Spain, up from 1.1 per cent in 2011. CiU would get 1.9 per cent, down from 4.2 per cent four years ago.
